A report of mini research

CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
1. BACKGROUND OF THE SELF STUDY
As a foreign language, English is learned as a main subject in Indonesia. Although the many learners who study and try to improve their skills in English, such as speaking, reading, writing, and listening, they get many difficulties to increase all of the skills. And I am as a writer, also try to focus on increasing the ability, either in speaking, writing, listening, or reading, because I am here a learner.
Such a productive skill, speaking is used by the people to be a toll which the people can communicate people directly. Probably, some learners who want to increase their English skill, also try to improve their ability especially for spiaking. Fortunately, different learners have different styles. Each of them certainly have different strategy to improve their speaking ability instead. And as a learner, the writer feels some way, that there are many weaknesses and obstacles in increasing speaking, such as in pronounciation, intonation, using correct grammar, fluency, and limited vocabulray.
In language learning strategies, there are many strategies which are capable used the learners to increase their speaking ability. Metacognitive strategies, one of indirect strategies, provides self management af a learner to manage themselves in learning English language, especially in speaking ability. Since self monitoring is a kind of strategies in increasing their ability. This strategy involves gauging either general language progress or progress of the four skills. Listeners or learners who do this strategy to improve their speaking ability, can check with the speaker to determine what they understood is relly accurate or by recording the sounds of themselves.it controls ability in speaking. Speaking is monitored after recording a short conversation which contain their sounds. Because of that problem, the writer choose this strategy as a best way to conduct speaking abilitythrough self monitoring by five times observations by the writer’s self. It will make sure how the increasing and progress happens on writer’s self. At last, the significant skill is speaking ability of course.

2. STATEMENTS OF THE PROBLEMS
As many obstacles that the writer faces when I am speaking , there are some problems which the writer has to overcome in better speking, they are :
2.1. Limited vocavulary
2.2. Low rate of fluency
2.3. Low grammar understanding
2.4. Uncorrect pronounciation
2.5. Limited idea / knowledge
2.6. Stress / intonation
All of these problems are usually some obstacles when a learner want to be mastered in English. So, in this case, self monitoring strategy provides a good way for learner, they will be able to correct their own grammar, prononciation, fluency, intonation, while speaking.

CHAPTER II
SELF MONITORING
1. SELF OBSERVATION
As a self monitoring strategy, the writer tried to make a short onversation with the writer’s people, such as lecturer and friends, by recording the conversation, and then the writer has tried to monitor about how the writer speaks ussually, then makes a simple note for correcting the wrong. In this self observation consists of five stages that the writer has done before, here is the stages:
a. Stage I
At first stage, the writer did a conversation when studying TEFL methodology in the classroom. At that time, writer felt very nevous to ask Mrs. Martin when the class was running. When the writer was speaking, I could not improve my speaking as knowledge, since limited vocabulry made me speech less. As pronounciation that i said, is still found uncorrect one. It must be considered by my self about that for the next progress, but at all almost good.
b. Stage II
At the second stage, I had a conversation with Muslim Jamal. I almost lost my nervous, because I spoke with my friend. But, unfortunately, I still said “a….a…..!”, it means that I still have problems in my fluency, pronounciation, and limited vocabulary. It can be caused that I tried to find suitable words for this for that topic.
c. Stage III
In this stage, there are many weaknesses that i have when i did this conversation with Vivi Zurniati and Muslim Jamal. We talked about the assignment that we have on this conversation, I still have limited vocabularies, because we talked about subject, it is teacher proficiency, that’s way I talked a lot about the topic which is so limited ocabuaries. So does the fluency, I still got low rate of my fluency.
d. Stage IV
In this stage, I felt nervous very much because i was not in good condition and did not focuson what we were talking about with Sari Rahmawati. My talking was a little so fast. There are several weaknesses that I got at that time, such as I spoke uncorrect grammar, wrong intonation. Whereas I had a progress in my fluency in speaking at that time.
e. Stage V
In this stage, i did conversation better than before, I feel this progress because hear my weaknesses while speaking. There are many progresses, such as I spoke not too fast or a good rate, I had much vocabulary. In additon, my pronounciation is getting better than before. But, besides all f the progress, I still have weaknesses, such as, I often repeat my words. It makes me looks like talk a slow a liitle bit. But i could control my emotion at that time.
Here a table which contain the progress when i get the onversation basedon my monitoring:
Aspects Stage I Stage II Stage III Stage IV Stage V
Structure Good Fair Very Good Good Good
Vocabulary Fair Good Fair Good Good
Pronounciation Good Good Good Very good Very good
Idea Good Fair Very good Good Excelent
Fluency Fair Good Good Very good Good
Communication strategy Good Good Good Good Very good
Intonation Fair Good Good Good Good

Notes : predicate
41 – 60 : fair
61 – 70 : good
70 – 85 : very good
85 – 100 : excelent

2. Dicussion
After getting observation, i find some weaknesses and obstacles that I face at that time. They are limited vocabulary, pronounciation, intonation, fluency, and grammar. In speaking skill, there are several aspects that should be integrated when some one speaks. They are :
a. Vocabulary
Vocabulary is a key for some one who want to use Englis in every skill, especially for speaking. It means that vocabulary is word that some body use to express their own words, either written or spoken lanugage. Limited vocabulary will influence how much some one talk and how far they can express their emotion and feeling. Consequently, some can be talk less when they do not have enough vocabulary to express.
b. Grammar
Dealing with definitiom of grammar, Harmer (2001 : 12) states that “the grammar of a language is the description of the ways in which words can change their form and canbe combined in to the sentences in that language”. It means that it has corelation with time of speaking. Some one can show what they mean by using this grammarbecause English senteces can be changed in to the other form changing the meaning.
c. Fluency
As an aspect, fluency is how soe one speaks by exact rate of speaking. This aspect can be assumed that how fast he / she speak or express their feeling in sentences.
d. Intonation
As Harmer (2001 : 12) states about the sounds of language that we construct words and pharses with individual sounds and we also use pitch change, intonation, and stress to convey different meanings. It means that different intonation will impact different meaning of waht we said.

e. Pronounciation
When some one talks, she / he has different style to pronounce their own word. But the important is iw he / she produce a correct word from their tongue.
These all the aspect of speaking, according to my observation, there are several factors that influnce someone to express my feeling, here is the factors that impact to speaking ability of some one:
a. Emotion
b. Condition
c. Knowledge
d. Grammar understanding
e. Dialect
f. Mother tongue
g. Mimic
h. Self confidense
Based on all of the aspect of speaking above, self monitoring takes a part for controlling and monitorung the progress each of the aspect. Any self evaluating must take in to consideration the difficultiy of the situation or the language. After doing this monitoring strategy, the big progress of each aspect in my fluency. It run so fast, because of practicing repeteadly. It is really effective for our increasing our flency in speaking. But, the others are running as well as I practice.
CHAPTER III
CONCLUSION
1. Conclusion
In short, as many as practicing English, self monitoring promotes our progress that can we see by ourselves stage by stage, so that, a learner who use this strategy will know about how his / her weaknesses at time of speaking. Consequently, he / she can monitor and correct the wrong, at last our speaking ability increased immediately.
2. Suggestion
There are many strategies that can be used by learners, but self monitoring stragtegy, as an alternative strategy, will guide learnerdirectly to be better to speak. You will see your increasing and improve your speaking ability, if you always pratice your English, and self monitoring will controll on what your problems in speaking. It is better for us to use it, after considering our weaknesses in speaking.
